THE star of this weeks Paris Motor Show was a Jaguar supercar. The C-X75 can accelerate to 100kph (62mph) in just 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 330kph. It is powered by batteries that are recharged by miniature diesel-sipping jet turbines. Although it is a mere experimental vehicle, the excited response shows that carmakers have come to see electric vehicles as part of their future. How large a part will depend on how drivers react to the rather less racy electric offerings from big producers such as General Motors (GM), Mitsubishi, Nissan and Renault.

Car production rose by six per cent last month compared with September 2009. This means year-to-date car output is running at 35 per cent above 2009′s figure. Increased levels of production have also been reflected in sales: both Jaguar and Land Rover registrations are up by around 40 per cent this year. For 2011 Jaguar has given the XJ a makeover and as a result its sportier, better looking and extremely modern. The front grille is still distinct and certainly impressive but the body is graceful and almost feline-like. The front seats are sublime and suitable for marathon long-distance driving sessions. Some passengers complained about the supersized transmission tunnel, which has the unfortunate effect of making the cabin feel more confined that it actually is, but I found that aspect of the interior quite roomy. Despite the coupe-like appearance, the rear seats are exceptionally roomy as well.

Jaguar and Land Rover sales rose 16 percent to 19,528 units in September, owner Tata Motors said. Jaguar sales for the month grew 10 percent to 4,861, while Land Rover sales increased 19 percent to 14,667. Tata said its September global vehicle sales rose 19 percent to 86,996 units from a year earlier. The company, India's biggest truck maker, also makes utility vehicles and cars, including the world's cheapest car Nano.
