The Next New Jaguar
Jaguar has already announced intentions to produce a new Jaguar model after the S-Type comes out in April of 1999. Brush-Up on Your Holiday History
Maybe you know the history behind every holiday celebration, or maybe, like most people, you could use a little brush-up. Sometimes its easy to get distracted during this busy time and never learn the meaning and history behind others and our own traditions. Below is a quick refresher course on each of the holidays Americans and others around the world will be celebrating his holiday season.
KwanzaaKwanzaa is an African American holiday founded by scholar-activist Dr. Maulana Karenga that celebrates family, community, and culture. Kwanzaa is celebrated for seven days, each day based on a different principle, December 26 through January 1. Seven symbols represent the holiday and include Mazao (crops), Mkeka (mat), Kinara (candleholder), Mishumaa Saba (seven candles), Muhindi (ears of corn), Zawadi (gifts), and Kikombe Cha Umoja (unity cup). An Estimated 18 million Africans around the world celebrate Kwanzaa, and its the fastest growing holiday in the U.S.
ChristmasThe first mention of the birthday of Jesus Christ is from the year 354. The actual birthdate of Jesus is unknown and the early church leaders in the 4th century fixed December 25th to be the celebrated day. This date was partially chosen because of traditional pagan Roman celebrations that took place during the same time giving Christians an alternative commemoration. Decoration is a major part of the Christmas celebration and the Christmas tree is widely known as the most popular symbol of the holiday. The traditional Christmas tree goes back to 16th century Germany when evergreens and fir-trees where brought indoors for Christmastide. This practice probably derived from pagan times when evergreens where symbols of eternal life, and trees were worshiped.
HanukkahHanukkah is celebrated by Jews around the world and is know as "The Festival of Lights". It is celebrated for 8 days, starting this year on Sunday, December 13. The holidays purpose is to commemorate the victory of the Jews against the Syrians in 165 BC. After their victory, priests entered the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and were unable to find more than one evenings worth of undefiled oil to keep the Temple lights burning. Miraculously, this amount of oil kept burning for 8 nights until new oil could be obtained. This miracle is the basis for the lighting of the Hanukkah lights. Two traditional elements of Hanukkah celebrations today include the Menorah, which hold 9 candles or lights and are displayed in windows, and the Dreidel, which is a game played with a type of "top" during the holiday celebrations.
